hello, anon!!!!

i DID watch the substance!!!!! i was able to see it last week with a coworker who’s REALLY into horror and we weren't sure what to watch between this and longlegs, but in the end fate (a coin flip) decided for us

quick review: i liked the movie overall, but im not as in love with it as my coworker and pretty much everyone else seems to be. im also never gonna watch it again in my entire life ;;;;;;; (but that’s on me)

slightly longer review (i swear im gonna try to keep it brief): let me start this by saying that unfortunately i am not the biggest fan of the body horror sub-genre because it’s one of the very few things that can actively be triggering to me, so as much as i try to be objective about the media i consume, this is the one instance where i really have a hard time doing that. i still willingly watch body horrors because i really appreciate them as a vehicle for social commentary, and it was no different for the substance: i admire the messages it conveyed about systemic misogyny, and internalized sexism, and self-hatred, and the inhumanity of the anti-aging industry, and the brutality of fame, and i think that watching such a poignant portrayal of the violence against the self could be a very healing experience in a way. i definitely came out of it wishing to be a little bit more accepting and kinder to myself

it's also a visually stunning movie, i really liked the cinematography, especially when it referenced other movies (although it got a bit too much at some point imho), and demi moore's performance is PHENOMENAL

all that being said, and without spoilering it, i personally think the movie would have benefited from a little bit more subtlety: the choice of partially super-imposing prior scenes over current ones and inserting voiceover flashbacks to earlier bits of dialogue honestly made me wonder if the director didn't trust the audience at all. im also not sure if the last act did the movie any favor. i really do understand why they went so over the top and what they were going for with it, i just feel like the tonal shift was very jarring and kinda derailed the momentum of the entire moviet

his is just my opinion tho!!!!! which..you didn't ask actually so im sorry if i kinda got ahead of myself ;;;;;;;; but in case you were interested in it, i think overall it was a good movie and im glad to have watched it (even if it did give me a panic attack ;;;;;;), however i do believe the execution could have been better

99% sure he's wanted in every country for crimes against humanity, has earned the title "eye of the pervert" in hell, Is responsible for making people go insane and maim themselves and each other with his cartoons, was born in 1919, and is a anthropomorphic toon sun bear. Despite his name, no he does not have schizophrenia either, he really has no excuse for what he does. There's a 20% chance he does have some sorta mental disorder or is just borderline insane and is not responsible for his actions during psychotic episodes, yet like if I'm being real he probably is fully aware of wtf he does considering he writhes on the ground laughing while doing it.

It’s okay that I skipped class today to rest because guess what!! I am not a product!! My worth is not determined by my academic productivity! I stayed home because I needed to rest! I am my first priority. That’s not being lazy, that’s being alive. My goal each and every day is to be happy and this is how I choose to pursue that goal today. If I don’t give myself restful, easy days when I need them, then I will not have them. I’m the only one who can meet my needs in this way, no one is gonna do it for me and some people might even discourage me from doing it. And that sucks but no one’s gonna actually be able to stop me. Ah gotcha this makes a lot more sense if they were donated I just assumed archiving scripts at the library was standard procedure or something. You've successfully convinced me these aren't the shooting scripts however I still feel like these are later versions, they feel consistent with the episode 1 script plus they have deleted scenes we know were filmed. And I totally agree with you re Alicole, I was just saying it's not an invalid reading when it comes to the show but I agree that people shouldn't use the scripts to support that reading. Also in your original post you said Aegon and Alicent carriage scene was very different in the script could you elaborate more on that please, I was gonna ask before but I forgot lol.

yeah i don't understand the full process but i know they get a lot of their scripts via donation, you can read more about the library on their website, it's a really interesting place! i'm planning on visiting my friend in california at some point and trust we will be in that library for hours <3 i think some scripts were later drafts than others, it depends on what color script the library has for certain episodes. and it's true that some of the deleted scenes were filmed, but idk if that means all of them were so !! who knows !!

re alicole again, i agree that there can be a romantic reading of it from the show, but it's just frustrating for people to say it's absolutely canon based solely on the scripts, so that's what was annoying me

re the carriage scene, this is the original script for that moment:

the lines are obviously the same, but the way the scene reads is completely different, specifically with that last line. i think this script was more in line with an earlier version of alicent they wrote, one that would laugh at criston calling rhaenyra a cunt. but obviously they went in a softer direction with her, whether that was due to olivia or just rewrites adding more depth to her character who can say. but i also know that aegon asking if alicent loves him was improvised by sara hess on set (so that's an example of them probably not rewriting the script and just talking out what the characters would do while filming). it's just interesting to see the changes between the way the scene was initially written and the way it plays out in the show. ofc alicent in that scene is not 'annoyed by her son's softness' but i wouldn't put it past certain individuals to see this line in the script and just immediately assume that's what she's feeling lmao
